Anatomy of a Disaster will discuss earthquakes and volcanic eruptions this Sunday

By Night Owl on 7:54 PM

A country that falls within the "Pacific Ring of Fire," the Philippines is naturally susceptible to a large number of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Unknown to many, the country experiences at least 20 earthquakes on a daily basis although most are not strong enough to actually make an impact on humans.

Still, Anatomy of a Disaster, GMA-7's monthly environmental series, has chosen this important and equally dangerous topic for its third installment, which will air this Sunday, October 31.

Aside from featuring the world's largest and most destructive earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, the program thorough its host, Greenpeace advocate Richard Gutierrez, makes a quick run-down of the country's most popular volcanoes scattered all over the archipelago, both active and dormant.

Richard also embarks on a treacherous journey as he examines one of the more scenic but complex active volcanoes in the country, the Taal Volcano, which at the time of his visit was at alert level 1.

Find out the many secrets surrounding the famous volcano straight from the local residents, who will not only share their experiences with earthquakes, but also survival tips for viewers to learn from.

This explosive and info-packed episode of Anatomy of a Disaster airs this Sunday, October 31, after Show Me The Manny on SNBO.

GMA News launches disaster preparedness campaign via I M Ready

By Night Owl on 7:47 PM

Filed Under:

Typhoon Ondoy caught many Filipinos by surprise when it hit the country last year. The calamity's aftermath was unimaginable that most were left scraping the mud off their properties after being submerged in flood waters for days.

This, among other stories of survival as well as tragic accounts of families who lost their loved ones during the typhoon, prompted GMA News to come up with I M READY: an interactive, multi-media campaign that urges the public to be on their toes when a disaster strikes.

I M READY, which is recently launched on GMA-7 through a channel plug and now carried by the channel's newscasts, presents to the viewers practical tips on how to prepare for emergency situations using three M's as guide.

MAGPLANO. A disaster strikes when it is least expected to happen. Although it may be true that one won't be prepared enough, it is still possible to prepare for whatever comes for the safety of everyone. A good example in the plug shows a family discussing their emergency plan, specifically where they would all go if ever they get separated during a calamity. It's also important for a family, particularly for kids, to understand what are considered emergency situations and what each member should do if these occur.

MAGSIGURO. Survival should also be a primary concern most especially during a calamity. That is why it's wise to secure an emergency kit as shown in I M READY. An emergency kit could consist of some basic supplies--food, bottled water, medicines, and even clothing--plus other essentials as agreed upon by the family. The kit must be kept in an area that is most accessible to everyone.

MAKIBALITA. Having the right information is as vital as ensuring the safety and survival of the family. Being up to date on the latest news and developments before and after a disaster including weather updates as well as rescue and relief operations is key to survival. It is also important to have a list of emergency numbers ready as seen in the plug.

Magplano, Magsiguro, Makibalita through GMA-7's I M READY.

GMA Network Launches 2010 Christmas Station ID: Isang Pagkilala sa Puso ng Pilipino Ngayong Pasko

This Christmas, GMA Network recognizes the heart of the Filipino through a series of true-to-life inspiring stories.

Tagged, “Isang Pagkilala sa Puso ng Pilipino Ngayong Pasko,” the stories tell the real-life tales of Filipinos who, by sharing what they can, have made a difference in the lives of many.

“When we came across these stories, we immediately knew that we had to share them with our audience,” said Regie Bautista, Vice-President, GMA Program Support Department. “This Christmas campaign reaffirms what Filipinos should always be proud of – the inherent goodness of their hearts.”

Starring in the vignettes are three of GMA’s biggest and most renowned Kapuso stars: Dingdong Dantes, Marian Rivera and Richard Gutierrez.

Richard plays Ed, a US immigrant based in Las Vegas, Nevada, whose heart remains very Filipino. With his wife, he personally packs balikbayan boxes with toys and school supplies and ships these at Christmas time to children in different provinces.

Marian portrays Mila, a woman who literally opens her home to the less fortunate. Mila welcomes the Season of Advent by selling Christmas decors in her garage. She uses the money she earns to prepare food and feed more than 200 families on New Year’s Eve.

Meanwhile, Dingdong is cast as Jose, a modern day Christmas angel. Jose spends Christmas Eve going to different hospitals in Metro Manila, paying the bills of indigent patients unable to afford treatment. When the surprised families of these patients ask to thank him, they are told that Jose has already left.

“These are real-life Santas,” explained Director Paul Ticzon, when asked what he found special about this project after having directed many of the Network’s Christmas campaigns. “These are people who go out of their way to create a meaningful Christmas for others. Their stories will hit you in the heart.”

GMA’s Christmas vignettes can be seen for the first time on 24 Oras, this Monday, October 25. Shot in high-definition (HD) digital video technology, the plugs are also slated to roll in SM Cinemas.

The GMA project team is composed of multi-awarded cinematographer Ding Achacoso (Director of Photography), Paul Ticzon (Director), Vince Gealogo (Co-Director), Ingrid Navarro (Producer) and cameramen Hanniel Aguilar, Javier Delgado and Paul Arrojado.

The whole campaign was spearheaded by the creative team of GMA's Program Support Department composed of Regie Bautista (Vice President), Armie Herrera (Associate Creative Director), Caca Ko, Weng Espiritu (Writers), Chris Roxas, Calvin Anchores, Donn Dacalanio (Artists), Hasmin Marable (Senior Project Manager), and Minette Lopez (Project Manager).

GMA NETWORK posts Jan.-Sept. net income of P2.27 Billion

By Night Owl on 10:30 PM

Filed Under:

Listed broadcast firm GMA Network Inc. on Thursday said that its net income for the January-September period amounted to P2.27 billion, 6 percent more than the same period last year.

But the broadcaster’s bottom line dipped to P583 million in the third quarter of this year, 30 percent lower than the second quarter’s P834 million.

“This drop is a disappointment, but not a big disappointment," GMA Network Chairman and CEO Felipe Gozon said in a media and analysts’ briefing at GMA Network Center, Quezon City.

“We really expected a huge drop this year because we substantially increased our effective rates that we charged to advertisers. Our effective prices last year were considerably lower than the prices charged by [other networks]," he added.

Gilberto Duavit Jr., GMA Network President and COO, pointed out that the broadcast firm is only “resetting" its pricing rate for advertisers.

Revenues

GMA Network registered P3.31-billion in revenues in the third quarter of 2010, down by 16 percent from the second quarter’s P3.94 billion.

“When poll ads dried up," the television firm’s revenues dropped, particularly in July and August, Gozon said.

The third quarter of 2010 is a non-election campaign season, he pointed out.

Year-on-year, the television firm posted an 8-percent increase to P10.875-billion revenues in the first nine months of 2010.

The increase in the network’s top line was backed by the “accumulation of airtime revenues from media platforms and subscription revenues from international operations," according to a statement.

Channel 7 posted a 7-percent increase in revenues to P9.262 billion. Q Channel 11 registered a 10-percent improvement to P346 million. International revenues climbed by 10 percent to P700 million. Radio’s revenues soared to P443 million, up 73 percent.

Rosy future

Gozon is confident that GMA Network will reach its bottom line target of P3.5 billion for the year. “We have not revised year-end target if the trend does not stop the upswing."

He said, “The times ahead are rosy, and even if revenues for the company went on a short-term hiatus, we are positive that we can finish the year with another banner performance — both in ratings and profits."

Gozon pointed out that GMA Network’s advertising load is on the uptrend as big advertisers have returned and made huge commitments with the television firm.

International channels

Overseas, GMA Network continues to eat up market share with its international channels, such as GMA Pinoy TV and GMA Life TV, the statement said.

By the end of the third quarter, GMA Pinoy TV’s subscribers were at 263,000, 17 percent higher than the subscriber count recorded in the same period in 2009. There were 123,000 subscribers of GMA Life TV, up 13 percent year-on-year.

Both channels have penetrated markets in the US, Canada, Europe, Middle East, North Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Guam, Papua New Guinea, Singapore, and Hong Kong.

GMA Network said that its distribution and acquisition subsidiary GMA Worldwide Inc. sold $124,264 worth of programs in the third quarter 2010, generating sales worth $306,824.

GMA Network — the most watched channel in viewer-rich Mega Manila during the third quarter of 2010 according to AGB Nielsen — comprises 55 percent of total urban television households nationwide. -- Jesse Edep/OMG, GMANews.TV

Finale of BORN TO BE WILD Expeditions II this Wednesday!

By Night Owl on 11:17 PM

Filed Under:

BORN TO BE WILD Expeditions II – featuring “Irrawaddy Mystery” and “Snake King” – comes to its most exciting week. Doc Ferds was initially set to look for twenty-one species of snakes documented in a small barangay in Catanduanes. But he soon discovers the place may hold more species yet to be catalogued by science. Two snake species that the team recorded on video were not known to reside in Catanduanes until the expedition team filmed them and showed them to the country’s top snake expert.

After two weeks in the wilderness, Doc and the team unexpectedly encounter the largest toxic snake in the world—the King Cobra. According to scientists, the last specimen of the King Cobra in Catanduanes was collected in the 1940s. The team’s discovery confirms that the King Cobra still thrives in the area. A small house in the same barangay is believed to be the dwelling place of several King Cobras. In order to prove this, Doc Ferds dares to get inside the house. But is he welcome in this snake’s kingdom?

Meanwhile, Kiko and his team are still in pursuit of the perfect full body shot of the Irrawaddy. Shrouded in mystery and not as popular as its other dolphin relatives, the Irrawaddy is critically endangered and numbers 39 as of the last count in Palawan’s Malampaya Sound in 2005. It is a unique dolphin species; for one, its face has some resemblance to the dugong’s, it lives in brackish water, is shy and does not “bow ride” or play near boats like the other dolphins.

For the past seven days, the team has captured several shots of their dorsal fins, blows and tails. But a clear glimpse of the face of the mysterious cetacean has not yet been seen. Experts say more than a handful of luck is required to capture the elusive Irrawaddy on video. Those who have been studying the animal for a decade share that even the most experienced wildlife photographers have tried and failed to get a close look at the Irrawaddy. As the expedition draws to a close, Kiko and the team are ready to call it a day when they realize, while reviewing the footage, that they captured the Irrawaddy’s face and body on camera several times. The mysterious and endangered Irrawaddy is finally revealed to the public in hopes that knowing this species would be one step towards protecting it.

Don’t miss the exciting finale of the three-part miniseries BORN TO BE WILD Expeditions II this Wednesday, after Saksi, on GMA-Network!

SI P-NOY AT ANG PINOY airs on GMA-7 this Sunday

By Night Owl on 9:56 AM

When Jessica Soho asked Pres. Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III about the biggest achievement of the previous administration he is willing to concede, he replied abruptly, "catering." The current MalacaƱang caterer is one of the few things retained from the past administration.

In his first exclusive sit-down interview as President of the Republic, PNoy proves to be a candid and opinionated Chief Executive with much to say about everything from the performance of the previous President to the status of his relationship with girlfriend Shalani Soledad.

The GMA News and Public Affairs special Si P-Noy at ang Pinoy tackles the first one hundred days of Pres. Aquino in office through the prism of his values and personal history as scion of the powerful Cojuangco and Aquino clans. It offers an uncompromising examination of the difficulties PNoy faced in adjusting to his responsibilities as the new President of the Philippines.

Multi-awarded broadcast journalist Jessica Soho did not hesitate to ask the difficult questions that the PNoy administration seems to avoid: from his stand on the redistribution of Hacienda Luisita land to his support of the Reproductive Health Bill. Soho was also given a rare opportunity to observe PNoy in the Office of the President as he goes about his day as the country's Chief Executive.

Si PNoy at ang Pinoy, featuring music from rapper Gloc 9, airs this Sunday, October 24, on GMA's Sunday Night Box Office (SNBO) after Show Me Da Manny.

KOREANA leads in its timeslot on its pilot week

Koreana has only been airing for a little more than a week but GMA-7's first original Sinenovela has been doing well in the afternoon ratings game. This is according to the most recent People/Individual Mega Manila Ratings Report furnished by ratings provider AGB Nielsen.

This original drama featuring the fresh love triangle of Kris Bernal, Steven Silva and Rocco Nacino debuted at number 3 last October 11 in the over-all afternoon chart by virtue of its 5.9 percent rating enough to beat its rival program's 4.8 percent.

Koreana was able to sustain the interest of the audience on the succeeding days as revealed in the following rating scores: 6 percent on Tuesday (October 12), 6.4 percent on Wednesday (October 13), 6 percent on Thursday (October 14) and lastly, 6.1 percent on Friday (October 15), securing the program's first week-long victory.

Koreana takes inspiration from the hugely popular Korean craze/fever. Kris Bernal portrays Jenna, the lead character, who sets off on a life-changing journey towards discovering her roots. Meanwhile, two StarStruck V graduates serve as her leading men. Rocco Nacino plays Benjo while Steven Silva brings life to an uptight yet goal-oriented half-Korean bachelor named Joshua.

Tension fills Koreana this week as Violeta (Eula Vandes) and Ivy (Saab Magalona) threatens to fire Jenna (Kris Bernal) from her job. However, Chang Hee (Eddie Garcia) quickly comes to her rescue by persuading Violeta to give Jenna another chance. Meanwhile, Jenna and Joshua become closer after the latter finds about about Jenna's Korean background. Benjo (Rocco Nacino), on the other hand, decided to take some distance from Jenna after they almost kissed.

Kris Bernal as Koreana continues her journey this week after Trudis Liit on GMA-7.

The Born Expeditions II has begun. Last Wednesday, October 13, Kiko Rustia and the team headed to Malampaya Sound in Palawan to discover the mystery behind the critically endangered marine mammal known as Irrawaddy. On his first day out at sea, Kiko was welcomed by signs of the elusive animal's presence. As they surveyed the area, he noticed splashes in the water, heads "spying up" and dorsal fins on the surface.

The team's next attempt is to film the Irrawaddy in closer detail to be able to introduce them to the public. Considered critically endangered, the Irrawaddy may disappear without people knowing about it. To provide a glimpse of this animal, World Wildlife Fund's Marivic Matillano, who's been studying the Irrawaddy for the past ten years, joins the team for a photo identification activity. But weather seems to be uncooperative as rains challenge the team during the expedition. Will the team succeed in capturing images of this marine mammal? And will the Irrawaddy finally be revealed in this episode?

Meanwhile, Doc Ferds is in Virac, Catanduanes beginning his search for the 21 species of snakes documented by a local biologist. On the first night of their search, they encounter a stunning green vine snake, checking off one species from the list. Soon after, more snakes make an appearance, including an aggressive individual that bites one of the team members.

The expedition becomes tense from here on. The team discovers that other than the 21 species of snakes that they're looking for, a King also resides in the area. The King Cobra makes a surprising appearance, and changes the course of the expedition.

The second part of The Born Expeditions II will air this Wednesday, October 20, in Born to be Wild, right after Saksi, on GMA-7.

GMA News AVP stresses accuracy and responsibility in reporting news items

By Night Owl on 11:17 AM

Filed Under:

"As we say, 'hindi natutulog ang balita, '" GMA AVP for News Operations Grace Dela PeƱa-Reyes said as she described the frenetic 24/7 news cycle brought on by new technology during the 17th National Public Relations Congress held in Makati City recently.

Ms. Dela PeƱa-Reyes is one of the international and local experts invited by the Public Relations Society of the Philippines (PRSP) to share their insights on the topics covered by the PR Congress theme, "PR 2.0 Build. Engage. Deliver."

This year's Congress theme took on the rapid changes in the practice of PR and communications, particularly with the advent of new media; as well as the challenges and opportunities in the industry which include building brand advocates, PR in brand building, engaging the audience and delivering value and results.

For the "Engage Media" segment of the PR Congress, Ms. Dela PeƱa-Reyes talked about the 24/7 news media cycle and the other new challenges posed by the technological advances in news gathering and reporting. A journalist for 23 years--all of them at GMA Network--Ms. Dela PeƱa-Reyes is a homegrown talent who rose from the ranks.

As a reporter, she used to "phone in [her] stories to someone in the newsroom typing on a typewriter. Now, [GMA-7] reporters in the field send scripts via email, relay initial story summaries via SMS, chat with the editor and discuss treatment of a story during an ongoing senate hearing for example, or maybe a press conference. And at anytime, a reporter may be asked to do a live report from almost anywhere there is a cell phone signal."

"GMA News may not be on the air 24 hours /7 days a week but it seems like it with the rise of social media," she said as she mentioned GMA News' website, gmanews.tv; Facebook account; Twitter account, which allows the network to do a blow-by- blow coverage via Twitter; and YOUSCOOP, for citizen journalism.

But as the Kapuso Network uses the latest technology to bring to the viewers the fastest and most comprehensive reports possible and the speed and manner of news delivery has changed, Ms. Dela PeƱa-Reyes emphasized, "We have to be responsible, and that is non-negotiable."

She points out that their mandate is to uphold the highest standards of journalism. "Even with the limited time, the news report must still be fair, it must be balanced. Accuracy and balance, for [GMA News], take precedence over speed."

"For us, a 24/7 news cycle means that we have to get the information sooner and send it across to the audience faster at any time of the day or night. We know that this has led to criticisms that all these led to a decline in journalistic standards. That is the challenge that we now face."

By Night Owl on 8:49 PM

In the last few months of its yearlong 60th anniversary celebration, GMA Network innovates once more as it brings to light the glamour, the drama, the intrigues, and the controversial secrets surrounding the world of beauty pageants in its newest original primetime series dubbed as BEAUTY QUEEN.

Chosen to play the coveted lead role of a poor but pure-hearted palengke queen-turned-beauty queen named Maita is none other than multi-award winning drama actress Iza Calzado, who has agreed to don a two-piece swimwear, confidently revealing her well-toned and curvaceous body.

But more than just showing off her elegance and beauty, the highly talented actress is raring now more than ever to showcase her wide-range in drama, where Iza truly excels and shines at her brightest.

Also pining for the bedazzled crown in Beauty Queen are two equally gorgeous and capable actresses: today’s generation’s premier kontra bida Katrina Halili, who plays the insecure and timid Dorcas, and 2007 Bb. Pilipinas-World Maggie Wilson, who takes on the role of the competitive and ambitious Rebecca.

Competing for the hearts of the three lovely ladies, meanwhile, are award-winning actor and the 1st Filipino artist to participate as a jury member in the Brussels Film Festival Marvin Agustin as the hugely successful Donald, Kapuso hunk Luis Alandy as the passionate Dante, and finally, sough-after primetime leading man TJ Trinidad as the womanizing Marc.

Completing the powerhouse cast are seasoned actors and actresses Elizabeth Oropesa, Bembol Rocco, Carmi Martin, Juan Rodrigo and 1969 Ms. Universe herself Gloria Diaz. Also in a very special role is the master showman, Mr. German Moreno. The program also stars Marky Lopez, Bubbles Paraiso, Victor Aliwalas, Ricci Chan, Tomas Gonzales, and introducing Lou Sison.

The story of Beauty Queen begins with Maita (Iza Calzado), a struggling beauty-queen aspirant, who dreams of competing in the prestigious Bb. Isla Pilipinas beauty pageant. She rushes from one beauty competition to another in hopes of making her mother, Amparo (Elizabeth Oropesa), a former beauty queen who was dethroned after becoming pregnant, proud of her.

Maita shares the same dream with her childhood best friend Rebecca (Maggie Wilson), the daughter of Leavida (Carmi Martin), another former beauty titlist who happens to be the fiercest rival of Amaparo during their glory days.

Despite being aware of their mothers’ complicated pasts, not to mention their differing social backgrounds, Maita and Rebecca remain supportive of each other’s goals, allowing each one to shine and be known in their own place and time.

As they reach their adolescent years, Rebecca will finally make it as a candidate in the Bb. Isla Pilipinas, while Maita, on the other hand, will be hired as a staff in the Bb. Isla Pilipinas Foundation (BIPF), an organization spearheaded by the prominent and powerful Madam Yuri Sandoval (Gloria Diaz).

Here, Maita meets Marc (TJ Trinidad), Madam Yuri’s ill-tempered son, who surprisingly softens up to the beautiful beauty queen aspirant. The two of them eventually fall in love, but had to keep their relationship a secret most especially from Marc’s denouncing mother.

Meanwhile, as the night of the competition draws hear, Rebecca confesses to Maita that she is having an affair with a married man, certain than her secret will remain safe with her most trusted friend.

At the day of their press conference, however, Rebecca was confronted by the wife in front of everyone present. Rebecca gets disqualified from the beauty pageant, and blames this entirely to Maita.

Immediately after the scandal, Leavida shifts her focus to Dorcas (Katrina Halili) and trains her, with the help of the revenge-seeking Rebecca, to be the family’s representative to the next Bb. Isla Pilipinas pageant, where Maita is also a candidate.

Maita brings home the crown, to the dismay of Leavida, Dorcas, and Rebecca. Leavida, not one to easily accept defeat, orchestrates a plan that led to the disappearance of Maita, who, by a stroke of fate, ends up in the loving arms of Donald (Marvin Agustin).

Believing that Maita had already died from the accident, Dorcas was assigned to take over her term as the reigning Bb. Isla Pilipinas. But more than replacing her as queen, Dorcas also takes Maita’s place in Marc’s life.

How will Maita claim back her thrown, her pride, and, most importantly, the love of her life? Is it possible for Maita, Rebecca, and Dorcas to share something deeper and more precious than a dream for a coveted crown? In the end, whose beauty will reign supreme?

Beauty Queen, under the helm of multi-awarded director, Joel Lamangan and originally written by RJ Nuevas, has the song “She” as its theme song as performed by the Platinum Prince of Soul Jay-R.

BEAUTY QUEEN will commence its glittering and awe-inspiring reign on October 18 after Ilumina on GMA Telebabad.
