Aside from chocolates, what other types of food are dogs not allowed to eat? What is the quickest and easiest way to cure scabies? How does one go about in adopting a homeless dog?

GMA Network’s latest primetime drama "Bantatay", in cooperation with The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), fulfills its promise of spreading love for animals as it launches Bilin ni Bantay on Monday, October 4.

A brief yet informative segment to be shown at the end of each episode, Bilin ni Bantatay aims to transform viewers, especially the young ones, into genuine animal lovers by instilling in them useful and practical tips on responsible pet ownership.

With Raymart Santiago doing the voiceover, Bilin ni Bantay will teach viewers how to properly care for their pets, treat simple ailments, and most importantly, encourage them to view pet ownership as a fun and rewarding experience.

Partnering with GMA Network in this endeavor is The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), which also has an active humane education program aimed at teaching kids kindness to animals, and the responsibilities of having a pet.

Doc Ferdz, Myka and Buwi reveal their SURVIVOR PHILIPPINES ordeal

By Night Owl on 8:08 AM

Filed Under:

Nobody said being in SURVIVOR PHILIPPINES is easy but nothing could have prepared Doc Ferdz, Myka and Buhawi for the hardships, the tensions and the surprises in the once-in-a-lifetime experience that is SURVIVOR PHILIPPINES CELEBRITY SHOWDOWN.

Doc Ferdz, Born to Be Wild’s resident vet; Myka Flores, Bubble Gang's “dakilang extra” who is now SURVIVORS’ “Bidang Extra” and Buhawi Meneses, the bassist of popular band Parokya ni Edgar, are the first three to be voted off the island by their tribemates in the SURVIVOR season that is proving to be the biggest, the hottest and the toughest yet.

After Starstruck Avenger Princess Snell quit the game, Magan, one of the three tribes, faced Tribal Council and the harsh reality of voting a tribe member out of the game. It would seem that Doc Ferdz is at an advantage because of his extensive knowledge of the outdoors, which would supposedly make his tribemates want to keep him around. But the tribal council turned out to be a surprise as the Born To Be Wild host found himself voted off.

Soon after, Magan lost another immunity challenge and was back for a second tribal council. This time, it was Myka’s turn to see the flame of her SURVIVOR torch extinguished. During most of her stay in the island, Myka seemed to be having a harder time than the other Magan tribe members. Some Magan tribe members have been grumbling that tribe leader Buhawi Meneses’ decision to vote off Doc Ferdz instead of Myka was a big mistake and Magan’s second bitter loss during the immunity challenge seemed to reinforce this belief.

By its third tribal council, Magan was down to only four tribe members – Buhawi, Mico Aytona, Elma Muros, and Solenn Heusaff. Buhawi’s decision to vote off Doc Ferdz came back to hurt his chances in SURVIVOR PHILIPPINES as his tribe mates chose to eliminate him from the competition.

Did Buhawi make a mistake in choosing to eliminate Doc Ferdz? Was it because of personal differences or was it a strategy that later on backfired? Facing harsh living conditions, nature’s deadliest predators, physically and emotionally taxing challenges, personal differences and betrayals in the game of SURVIVOR, would Doc Ferdz, Myka and Buhawi play SURVIVOR again given another chance? What would they do differently? Among the remaining castaways, who do they think has what it takes to become the first sole celebrity Survivor?

14 castaways remain. Who will get the job done? Who will come undone? Who will outwit, outplay, outlast, and outshine on primetime?

SURVIVOR PHILIPPINES CELEBRITY SHOWDOWN airs from Monday to Friday, after 24 Oras, only on GMA Network.

Charice wows Pinoy audiences in premiere of Glee season 2 - GMANews.TV

By Night Owl on 8:15 AM

Filed Under:

“Welcome to the Glee club!" With these words, McKinley High’s Glee club coach Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) invites Filipina exchange student Sunshine Corazon to join his group, New Directions. He has been suitably impressed, after hearing Sunshine's soaring vocals in a rendition of the song “Listen," originally sung by Beyoncé. One member of the team, however, is less than enthused about the whole thing. Rachel Berry (Lea Michele), lead singer of New Directions, sits with a forced smile throughout Sunshine’s audition, despite the standing ovation and wholehearted approval from everyone else in the group. Sunshine Corazon is played, of course, by Pinay singing sensation Charice Pempengco, who has gained international fame through appearances on the Oprah Winfrey show, the release of her hit single “Pyramid," and collaborations with Celine Dion and other big names in the music industry.

Charice made her debut in the first episode of Glee, season 2, in black-framed glasses and pigtails, a petite girl with an astonishingly full voice. She is set to be a recurring character on the show. The Glee season 2 premier aired in the Philippines on Wednesday at 4 p.m. on the ETC cable channel, with a replay in the evening on free television.

The season 2 premier of the hit show has been highly anticipated, in large part due to the scheduled appearance of Charice as a rival of the competitive and confident lead character, Rachel. The episode, titled “Audition," centers around the efforts of Schuester to recruit new members when the budget of the glee club is slashed by the school administration. While putting up posters in the girls’ bathroom inviting students to join, Rachel notices Sunshine. “You're from the Philippines, where it's sunny everyday," Rachel says brightly. “Except for the monsoons," Sunshine points out. Rachel is astounded when Sunshine, in earphones, begins singing along to the pop song “Telephone," popularized by Beyoncé and Lady Gaga. Rachel starts singing too, but the duet makes it clear that her role as the star of New Directions is threatened by Sunshine's voice. Later, Rachel complains to the other members of the Glee club. "There is a new student at this school named Sunshine who is a Filipino and is shorter than me, which I didn't think was possible, and is very unnerving." Reluctantly, Rachel adds, “And she has a remarkable voice."

After Rachel hatches a couple of plots to sabotage Sunshine’s audition, including sending her to a crack house, their rivalry culminates with the acceptance of Sunshine into the Glee club. But there are twists in the episode which dashes Schuester’s hopes of gaining valuable new additions to his group.—Larissa Mae Suarez/JV, GMANews.TV

REEL LOVE presents TWEEN HEARTS

By Night Owl on 9:34 PM

Solidly banking on their nationwide fan base and star appeal, GMA Network prides itself for discovering an extraordinary group of young stars popularly known as TWEENS.

As each Tween discovers something new on their personal lives like their family crises, their real identities, new flames and the realization that there is more to what they think they are and what others see them to be, it is only fitting to feature them in their own drama series where they can truly shine.

Beginning September 26, the Tween Royalties of GMA headlined by Barbie Forteza and Joshua Dionisio, Bea Binene and Jake Vargas together with Joyce Ching, Kristoffer Martin, Lexi Fernandez, Louise de los Reyes and Derek Monasterio are all set to grab the limelight in the network’s newest youth-oriented drama series every Sunday afternoon, REEL LOVE presents TWEEN HEARTS.

Basking in the success of their flourishing careers, these Tweens are ready to regale televiewers and their legions of fans and supporters in the eight-part episode of Tween Hearts which features an endearing storyline and characterization, intriguing plots, and universal theme for all ages.

After many years of separation, Bambi (Barbie) is finally reunited with her mom Irene (Sylvia Sanchez) and younger sister Belinda (Bea). She lived a simple life with her father Ted (Emilio Garcia) in the province while Belinda experienced a luxurious lifestyle with Irene in the city.

The differences between Bambi and Belinda ignited further tensions which are also triggered by the special attention given by Irene to Bambi to catch up and make up for the lost time they were not together.

Belinda finds comfort in the arms of Jacob, known as one of the school’s outcasts. Jacob offers reassuring words to Belinda which later on develops into a special friendship between the two.

Aside from Bambi’s newfound home, she also transfers to Belinda’s campus where she meets a new batch of friends including Luisa (Louise), Aya (Joyce) and Jacob (Jake). Adding spice to her school life are Leslie (Lexi), Rick (Derek) and Josh (Joshua).

Josh is widely known as the over-achiever in the campus. He spends more time alone and often rejects the rules imposed by his sister Rose (Roxanne Barcelo). Nothing can get in his way except Bambi who softens his heart and strong persona.

Meanwhile, Rick, Belinda and Leslie organize an underground victory party in celebration of the championship won by the varsity team. Even the school’s “outcasts” headed by Bambi, Jacob, Aya and Luisa arrive at the festivity.

In the middle of the party, a commotion erupts which is masterminded by Josh. Everyone is reprimanded and the school authorities order them to attend a recollection as punishment.

The students think it is the usual recollection but they get the shock of their lives when they discover that the affair will be in the form of various activities that will test their strengths, weaknesses, emotions and their way of thinking.

What will happen to these bitter sisters? Will an earnest apology be enough to heal the wounds that rip them apart? Will Bambi become the perfect tool to warm the heart of the bully Josh? Will the music geek Jacob be able to tame the spoiled brat Belinda? Who will win Chris’ heart between Leslie and Aya? Who will end up victorious in the never-ending battle of Luisa and Rick?

In preparation for their roles, the entire cast underwent extensive workshops and trainings facilitated by the episode’s director Gina Alajar. Rounding up the cast are Sylvia Sanchez as Irene, Emilio Garcia as Ted and Roxanne Barcelo as Rose with a team of seasoned scriptwriters headed by Kit Villanueva-Langit together with Roy Iglesias as Senior Creative Consultant and Denoy Navarro-Punio as Creative Consultant.

Don’t miss Part 1 of REEL LOVE presents TWEEN HEARTS this Sunday, September 26 on GMA.

Viewers fell under the spell of GRAZILDA, GMA Network’s original drama series topbilled by Glaiza de Castro and Geoff Eigenmann, after its strong debut on the Telebabad block.

Based on data supplier AGB Nielsen Philippines, Grazilda enjoyed an impressive opening with 14.5 percent Mega Manila people rating last Monday, September 13. On Tuesday and Wednesday, it ruled once again with 14.4 percent and 13.7 percent on the weeknight primetime race, respectively.

Anticipation is high for interesting twist incorporated on the well-loved Cinderella fairy tale which exposes the crossover between fantasy and reality of the characters of the wicked stepsisters, the stepmother, and the prince. Filipinos instantly fell in love with the brave, out-of-the-ordinary heroine, one of the ugly stepsisters herself, Grazilda.

Glaiza, along with the rest of the ensemble cast, are able to give remarkable performances to their respective roles which by far exceeded everyone’s expectations. Glaiza shines in her own way as the antagonist turned protagonist of the drama series which excites and surprises her adoring fans and supporters.

More exciting spins will unfold as Grazilda crosses the boundaries of the real world where she meets her long-lost father Fernando (Joel Torre) and stepmother Veronne (Cherie Gil) and stepsisters Cindy (Yasmien Kurdi) and Tonette (Stef Prescott). Her life will crumble after discovering that her mother Matilda (Rio Locsin) and sister Anatalia (Dyanin Cruz) are being maltreated in Fantasia.

How will Grazilda cope with her struggles in the real world now that she is stuck to live with own wicked stepmother and stepsisters? Will Eric (Geoff) become Grazilda’s dashing prince charming?

Grazilda airs weeknights right after Survivor Philippines Celebrity Showdown on GMA Telebabad.

Meet Television's Newest Canine Hero in Bantatay over at GMA Network

By Night Owl on 11:49 PM

Beginning Monday, September 20, television’s newest canine hero – a lovable, frisky, and intelligent yellow Labrador – takes centerstage in GMA Network’s newest original primetime drama about an extraordinary bond between a dog and his master, Bantatay.

Leading the dynamic pack of actors and actresses that make up the cast of Bantatay is action star-turned-comedian/celebrity dad Raymart Santiago, who will breathe life to the character of Bernard, a loving and kind-hearted father who works as a veterinarian. Bernard will experience an early death in the story but by a startling twist of fate, returns to life after inhabiting the body of a Labrador Retriever named Bantay.

In the beginning, Bantay serves as a guide dog to Joanna (Jennica Garcia), a spirited blind girl who lost her vision in an accident. Despite her handicap, Joanna is able to maintain a normal life with the help of Bantay and her Lolo Estong, who generously provide her with unconditional love and affection.

Sadly, their simple life turns devastatingly complicated after a fire burns down their house, killing Lolo Estong and injuring Joanna and Bantay. The rescuers are able to save Joanna, but accidentally left the poor dog behind. Bantay, determined to be reunited with his master, chases after the ambulance until it was no longer in sight.

Right at the same time, Bernard (Raymart Santiago), along with his wife Marcela (Gelli de Belen), and children Emily (Krystal Reyes), Junix (Renz Valerio), and Farrah (Sweet Ramos), is on his way home and finds Bantay in his weakened state. He brings the dog home, treats him in his small clinic, and eventually decides to keep Bantay until they find his real owner.

For months, Bantay faithfully returns to their old house hoping to see Joanna but after a while, he figures out that his new home is now with the Razons. Bantay grows particularly close to Bernard and becomes his constant and most trusted companion.

But their happy and peaceful life will turn upside down after Marcela mysteriously disappears one evening, a scheme orchestrated by their evil relatives, Vangie (Eva Darren) and Daisy (Camille Prats), who insists on claiming Bernard’s ancestral house.

After such devastating event, a group of masked men enters Bernard’s house and shoots him in front of his children. Bernard will have a difficult time accepting his death and will give anything to have his life back.

By an unexpected turn of events, Bernard surprisingly wakes up to find himself inside the body of his pet Labrador, alive and about to set forth on a new journey as Bantatay.

Will Bernard be able to complete his mission before his new lease on life expires? Will Joanna ever get her vision back and in the event that she does, will she still come looking for Bantay?

Completing the cast are Gary Estrada as Simon, Marcela’s obsessive first boyfriend, Al Tantay as Rigo, Joanna’s uncle who owns a pet shop in Cartimar, Marissa Delgado as Clarita, Marcela’s materialistic mother, Carl Guevarra as Norbert, a pet shop employee who will later fall in love with Joanna, Elmo Magalona as Artie, Joanna’s co-worker and ally, Sheena Halili as Ming-ming, Joanna’s funny and dependable friend, Jessie Corcuera as Frankie, Bernard’s assistant in his veterinary clinic, Kier Legaspi as Bruno, Vangie’s alcoholic and lethargic son, Prince Stefan as Calvin, Joanna’s wealthy suitor, Maybeline Dela Cruz as Lilian, Artie’s abusive mother, and Isabel Nesreen Frial as Len-Len, Artie’s little sister. The lovable character of Bantay will be played by a two-year old Lab whose real name is Charlie.

Directed by Don Michael Perez and written by Des Severino, Bantatay is certain to appeal to anyone from any age bracket as it provides a touching and inspiring interpretation of a father’s undying love for his children, and his special relationship with the so-called “man’s best friend”.

The show, which is conceptualized by RJ Nuevas, also inculcates correct animal treatment among viewers, especially the young ones, by imparting useful information on proper pet care through a special segment shown at end of each episode in partnership with the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS).

Follow the amusing, exciting, and heartwarming adventures of Bantatay beginning Monday, Septmber 20, before 24 Oras on GMA Telebabad.

Viewers in the United States can watch Bantatay beginning September 22; and in the Asia Pacific and the Middle East on September 23 through GMA Pinoy TV, the international channel of GMA Network.

GMA Network releases new guidelines on crisis coverage

By Night Owl on 12:52 AM

Filed Under:

GMA Network of the Philippines has revised its guidelines on safety and ethics in crisis coverage.

As part of the changes, the new guidelines call on employees to ““assume that police may not be able to handle media or a crowd. Thus we must know when and how to restrain ourselves.”

The guidelines also stipulate a “renewed commitment” to avoid interviewing or talking to hostage takers.

The changes reflect the soul-searching underway in the country’s media industry over its role in the botched rescue of tourists held by a sole gunman on August 23. Media — broadcast in particular — have been heavily criticized for its minute-by-minute coverage of the fiasco and are now the subject of a Senate inquiry.

Investigations show that the hostage taker Rolando Mendoza was watching live coverage of events inside the hijacked bus. Mendoza was also interviewed on radio during the crisis, which police say prevented negotiators from reaching him. In one report, an ABS-CBN journo gave details of the police positions ahead of the failed assault.

GMA should be applauded for taking the high road on this. No life should ever be sacrificed the pursuit of any story. I’d like to see the measures adopted by other major news organizations.

Ultimately, it comes down to cooperation among media agencies. I hope this incident will force an open channel of communication among news executives during times of crisis. We may be competing to get the story out, but ultimately, we’re all in this together and that’s how our audience will remember it.
